Scenic view of Continental Divide

Continental Divide is a small crossing point on I-40 west of Grants, marking the line where rainfall splits between the Pacific and Atlantic watersheds. It’s a five-minute novelty stop but if you’re already driving this stretch of I-40, it’s an excuse to pull over and stand on the hydrological split of the continent.

What to Do

Roadside historic markers on the frontage road note the elevation — signed at around 7,245 feet, with highway signs along the interstate itself putting it closer to 7,275 feet — and explain the divide’s significance, along with older names for the pass, including Campbell Pass. The Continental Divide Trail crosses through the area as it runs the length of New Mexico, so hikers following the CDT pass directly through here, though this isn’t a developed trailhead for casual day hikes. Otherwise, there’s little more than the sign, a photo opportunity, and a small roadside community.

How Much Time to Spend

Ten minutes can cover it completely. This is a quick pull-off, not a place to plan around.

Getting There

The crossing sits on I-40 between Exit 44 (Coolidge) and Exit 53 (Thoreau), 25 miles west of Grants. It’s directly on the interstate frontage road, well marked by highway signage and accessible in any vehicle.

Continental Divide is a fun stop with some geographic trivia attached, we’re still divided on how interesting it is.
