Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area
A dedicated Nordic ski area near Red River with groomed trails winding through a mountain forest.
📍GPS: 36.699468, -105.348369

Enchanted Forest Cross Country Ski Area is a Nordic ski and snowshoe area high in the mountains above Red River. Unlike the downhill ski resorts nearby, Enchanted Forest has no chairlifts. Instead, its trails wind through forests and open mountain terrain on Bobcat Pass, offering developed cross-country skiing trails.
Enchanted Forest will not operate during the 2026-27 winter season. The property is currently for sale, and its owners have expressed hope that a new owner will eventually reopen the ski area.
Terrain Overview
Enchanted Forest has more than 30 kilometers of cross-country ski trails, with routes ranging from relatively gentle beginner loops to longer and more demanding climbs. Trails are groomed for both classic cross-country skiing and skate skiing, making the area suitable for beginners as well as experienced Nordic skiers.
The trail system sits at roughly 10,000 feet in the Carson National Forest, where spruce, fir, and aspen forests cover much of the surrounding landscape. Several higher sections open to views toward the Wheeler Peak Wilderness, Moreno Valley, Gold Hill, and the mountains surrounding Red River.
Snowshoers have their own network of roughly 15 to 18 kilometers of trails, while several kilometers of the system have historically been open to visitors skiing or snowshoeing with dogs. Because there are no lifts, expect to earn every downhill section with a climb first.
Facilities & Services
When operating, Enchanted Forest has been a full-service Nordic ski area with cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals, trail passes, lessons, and guided snowshoe trips. Its groomed and marked trail system makes it considerably easier for beginners to try Nordic skiing than heading directly into ungroomed backcountry terrain.
One of the area’s most unusual features is its network of yurts. Warming yurts provide places to stop along the trails, while several backcountry yurts have historically been available for overnight stays. These facilities should not be assumed to be available while the ski area remains closed.
There are no restaurants or large resort facilities on the mountain, but Red River has lodging, restaurants, shops, and additional winter activities nearby.
Getting There
Enchanted Forest is located about 3.5 miles east of Red River, near the summit of Bobcat Pass along NM 38. From Red River, follow NM 38 east toward Eagle Nest and turn onto Sangre de Cristo Drive near the top of the pass.
The ski area sits around 9,800 feet above sea level, and NM 38 can become snowy or icy during winter storms. Check road conditions before driving over Bobcat Pass, particularly during or immediately after heavy snowfall.
