Place guide
Hermit Peak
A 10,263-foot summit above Las Vegas, reached by a strenuous day hike through the Pecos Wilderness.
📍GPS: 35.74379, -105.415255

Hermit Peak rises to 10,263 feet above the mountains west of Las Vegas, with its northern face visible from much of the surrounding area. The peak is named for Giovanni Maria Agostini, an Italian hermit who lived in a cave near the summit in the 1860s. Today, reaching the top requires a long hike through an area heavily affected by the 2022 Hermits Peak Fire.
What to Do
The Hermits Peak Trail (223) starts near El Porvenir and climbs 2,800 feet to the summit area. Depending on how much of the upper ridge you explore, expect around 8 to 9.5 miles round trip. Near the top, you can visit Hermit’s Cave, where Agostini’s lived during his time on the mountain. Continue toward the summit for nice views over northern New Mexico.
How Much Time to Spend
Plan on around 5 to 6 hours for the hike. Hermit Peak works best as the main activity for the day rather than a quick stop between other places. Start early, especially during summer, since much of the trail now has limited shade.
Getting There
From Las Vegas, take NM-65 west toward Gallinas and El Porvenir. Continue toward El Porvenir Campground and follow signs for the Hermits Peak Trailhead. The final approach transitions from pavement to forest road but is fine for a normal passenger vehicle. Cell service is limited or nonexistent in the area, so download maps and directions before leaving Las Vegas.
