Scenic view of The Box

Southwest of Socorro, Box Canyon cuts through dark volcanic rock just outside town. Called “the Box,” its steep walls, easy access, and established climbing routes have made it one of Socorro’s go-to outdoor spots, especially for climbers and boulderers looking for a quick session close to town.

What to Do

Climbing is the main attraction. A dirt trail drops from the parking area into the canyon, where routes line walls such as Waterfall Wall, Corner Block, and Fillet a Papillon. The climbing ranges from approachable beginner routes to much harder technical lines on solid volcanic rock.

The Box also hosts the annual Box Canyon Climbing Competition, a New Mexico Tech-run bouldering competition that draws climbers from around the Southwest and has grown into one of the largest climbing events in New Mexico.

You do not need climbing gear to enjoy the Box, though. The walk into the canyon is short and scenic, with rocky walls, patches of shade, and a much more secluded feel than you might expect this close to Socorro. Weekends can be fairly active, especially during the cooler spring and fall months.

How Much Time to Spend

If you just want to see the canyon and walk around, an hour is plenty. Climbers can easily spend half a day here, and primitive camping nearby makes it possible to stay overnight and get an early start the next morning.

Getting There

From Socorro, take US 60 west for about 7 miles and look for the turnoff to the Box Recreation Area. A short dirt road leads downhill to the main gravel parking area. Most passenger vehicles should be fine. The recreation area has a vault toilet and trailhead kiosk, but no drinking water, so bring everything you need. Camping is free and primitive, with a 14-day stay limit.

The Box is an excellent spot for a quick outdoor adventure. You get real canyon walls, established routes, quiet desert scenery, and free camping just a few minutes outside Socorro.
