📍GPS: 36.447859, -105.007823

The Tooth of Time is one of the most recognizable landmarks near Cimarron, rising above Philmont Scout Ranch to an elevation of 9,003 feet. The large dacite formation has long been a landmark in northern New Mexico and is especially important to Philmont, where it has become one of the ranch’s main symbols. For most visitors however, the Tooth is something to see from below rather than hike directly.
What to Do
Public access to Philmont’s backcountry is restricted, so the trail to the Tooth of Time is generally reserved for registered Philmont participants and authorized programs. You can still explore Philmont’s main Base Camp area, which includes the National Scouting Museum, historic Villa Philmonte, and other exhibits covering the history of the ranch and Scouting.
How Much Time to Spend
Plan on around an hour for the museum and grounds. This works best as a stop while exploring Cimarron and the surrounding area rather than as a full-day destination.
Getting There
Philmont Scout Ranch’s main entrance is on NM-21, a few miles south of Cimarron. The road is paved and well signed, with parking available around the main Base Camp facilities. Museum and tour schedules vary by season, with the widest public access generally available during Philmont’s summer operating period.
Before You Go
Don’t plan on hiking to the Tooth of Time unless you’re participating in an authorized Philmont program. For the general public, the main experience is seeing the formation from below and visiting Philmont’s museums and historic buildings.
If you’re already exploring Cimarron, Philmont is worth a stop for both the view and the history behind one of northern New Mexico’s most recognizable landmarks.
