Scenic view of Walatowa Slot Canyon

Walatowa Slot Canyon is a short red-rock canyon located on Jemez Pueblo land. The red cliffs get their color from iron oxides in the rock, and a narrow slot cut into the walls stays shaded most of the day.

What to Do

The hike is a 1.5-mile loop, and you’ll see layered red rock, desert vegetation, and views of the surrounding mesas along the way. The slot itself narrows but never squeezes down — you won’t need to shimmy through anything.
