Place guide
White Rock Overlook
Stunning viewpoint above the Rio Grande offering dramatic 1,000-foot canyon views.
📍GPS: 35.826254, -106.179893

White Rock Overlook looks down on the Rio Grande and the walls of White Rock Canyon from just south of Los Alamos. The overlook sits high above the river, with a straight-down view into the gorge the Rio Grande has cut through the mesa.
What to Do
An easy walk from the parking area leads to several viewing platforms looking out at the canyon, distant mountains, and the winding river far below. At sunrise and sunset the canyon walls turn red, orange, and gold. Trails from the site descend into White Rock Canyon and connect to the Rio Grande, and there are benches, picnic areas, and interpretive displays near the platforms.

How Much Time to Spend
15 to 30 minutes is enough for the viewing platforms. Add more if you plan to walk one of the trails down into the canyon.
Getting There
From Los Alamos, take NM-4 south toward White Rock and follow signs through town for White Rock Overlook Park. The overlook is reached entirely by paved roads, with a parking area just a short walk from the viewpoint.
Paved access and no fee make this an easy add if you’re already in Los Alamos, not a reason to make the drive on its own.
