Abiquiú Lake is a large reservoir on the Chama River just west of Abiquiú. Surrounded by colorful sandstone cliffs and mesas, it draws boaters, anglers, campers, and swimmers to the same red-rock scenery that made this stretch of country famous.
What to Do
Several campgrounds, picnic areas, and boat ramps make it easy to spend a day on the water, while kayakers and paddleboarders explore the lake’s quiet coves. Anglers fish for bass, trout, catfish, and walleye.
How Much Time to Spend
A stop at an overlook or boat ramp takes less than an hour, but if you’re bringing a kayak, boat, or fishing gear, plan on spending at least half the day on the water.
Getting There
Abiquiú Lake is reached via US-84, with paved access roads leading down to the marina, campgrounds, and visitor center. Day-use and camping fees apply, and the lake is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.
It’s an easy pairing with a stop in Abiquiú itself.
