Scenic view of Echo Amphitheater

Echo Amphitheater is a natural rock formation located along Highway 84 between Abiquiú and Chama in northern New Mexico. The bowl-shaped canyon sends sound bouncing back off the surrounding sandstone walls, and yes, it really does echo.

What to Do

A short paved trail leads from the parking area to the base of the formation. The trail is short and but very scenic, offering great views of the surrounding rock formations. The main draw is standing below the amphitheater and yelling into it. The echo is surprisingly loud and clear. Even a whisper carries across the amphitheater.

How Much Time to Spend

20 to 40 minutes is plenty — this is a quick stop, not a hike.

Getting There

Echo Amphitheater sits right off US-84, with a paved parking area and a short paved trail to the formation. A $5 per-car fee applies.

It’s a unique experience you can add to a drive on US-84 through Abiquiú country.
