Scenic view of Emory Pass

NM-152 crosses the Black Range at Emory Pass, 8,228 feet up in the Gila National Forest. The pass is one of the highlights of the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway, which runs between San Lorenzo and Caballo.

What to Do

The main stop is the Emory Pass Vista, a paved overlook just off the highway. On a clear day, you can see east across Kingston and Hillsboro toward Caballo Lake and the Rio Grande Valley, with views stretching for dozens of miles. The overlook has trailheads as well. The Black Range Crest Trail 79 heads deeper into the mountains for a longer and more difficult hike. The Emory Pass Scenic Trail 796 runs about 4.5 miles one way between Kingston and Emory Pass. There are also picnic tables, a grill, and a pit toilet at the vista.

How Much Time to Spend

For a quick photo stop, plan on about 15 to 20 minutes. If you walk part of the Scenic Trail or stop for a picnic, give yourself more time.

Getting There

Emory Pass is on NM-152 between Hillsboro and Kingston to the east and the Mimbres Valley and San Lorenzo to the west, around mile markers 31–32. The road is paved, but it gets narrow and winding near the pass, with tight switchbacks. The climb from the west gains nearly 3,000 feet in about nine miles.

Emory Pass is an easy stop on the drive between Truth or Consequences and Silver City, especially if you’re already going through Hillsboro and Kingston.
