Best Things to Do in Truth or Consequences

Truth or Consequences is a quirky desert town known for hot springs, art, and one of the most unusual names in America. Set along the Rio Grande, the town sits above a natural geothermal aquifer and is one of the best places in New Mexico for a mineral-water soak. Add a walkable historic district, active art scene, Elephant Butte Lake, and Spaceport America, and you have an excellent getaway destination!

Whats up with the name?

Truth or Consequences was originally called Hot Springs, but in 1950 the town renamed itself after a popular radio game show called Truth or Consequences. The host, Ralph Edwards, had promised to broadcast the show’s tenth-anniversary episode from the first town willing to adopt its name, and local residents voted in favor of the change. The broadcast gave the town nationwide attention, and Ralph Edwards returned with celebrities for its annual Fiesta for nearly 50 years. Today, the name Truth or Consequences (often shortened to T or C) may be the weirdest town name in the state and is a point of pride for locals.

Historic Hot Springs District

The Historic Hot Springs District is the heart of Truth or Consequences and one of the main reasons to visit. Many bathhouses and hotels offer private mineral baths, outdoor pools and spa treatments. Some are rustic and inexpensive, while others feel (slightly) more resort like. Most allow visitors to reserve a soak by the hour, even if they are not staying overnight.

Riverbend Hot Springs has the most dramatic setting, with outdoor pools overlooking the Rio Grande. Blackstone Hotsprings, Sierra Grande, Pelican Spa, Indian Springs, and the Charles Motel each offer a different take on the traditional T or C soaking experience. Reservations are recommended on weekends or holidays.

Art & Downtown

Downtown Truth or Consequences is small, colorful, and easy to explore on foot. Broadway and Main Avenue are lined with bathhouses, murals, galleries, vintage storefronts, and restaurants. On the second Saturday of each month, the town hosts an Art Hop, when galleries and shops stay open later and there is often live music, food, and special exhibitions throughout downtown. It’s worth spending an hour walking around the town, and don’t forget to see the very small Healing Waters Plaza!

Elephant Butte Lake State Park

Located ten minutes north of town, Elephant Butte Lake is the closest thing New Mexico has to a beach. The state park is popular for boating, fishing, swimming, camping, and relaxing along the shoreline. Marinas and boat ramps provide access to the water, while miles of open desert and make it easy to find a quiet place away from the busier recreation areas.

Truth or Consequences has more to offer than hot springs. Top places to visit include:

• Geronimo Springs Museum – The town’s primary museum, featuring exhibits on local history, Native American artifacts, mining, ranching, and the region’s cultural heritage.
• Veterans Memorial Park & Military Museum – Honors American veterans with military vehicles, memorials, and exhibits covering several conflicts.
• Geronimo Trail Visitor Center – A great first stop for maps, local history, exhibits, and information about attractions throughout Sierra County.
• El Cortez Historic Theater – A beautifully restored 1940s theater that hosts movies, concerts, performances, and community events.
• Spaceport America – Commercial spaceport offering guided tours that depart from Truth or Consequences.

If you only have time for one stop, the Geronimo Springs Museum provides the best introduction to the history and culture of Truth or Consequences and the surrounding region.
