Oliver Lee Memorial State Park

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park lies at the western base of the Sacramento Mountains, 12 miles south of Alamogordo. The park protects Dog Canyon, where rugged desert meets steep mountain cliffs and a year-round spring-fed stream. It also preserves the historic ranch home of Oliver Milton Lee, one of southern New Mexico’s most controversial ranchers.

Things to Do

Hike Dog Canyon

The park’s signature hike is the Dog Canyon Trail, a route that climbs from the Chihuahuan Desert into the Sacramento Mountains. Even hiking the first mile will reveal dramatic canyon scenery and views back across the Tularosa Basin (including White Sands)! The full trail continues for 5.5 miles one way, gaining over 3,000 feet in elevation before terminating in alpine Forest.

There are ruins of a cabin along the trail around the 3-mile mark. This is a good turn around point if you don’t want to hike the full trail. If you prefer a shorter hike, the Dog Canyon Trailhead also provides access to the Dog Canyon Overlook Trail, a 1.5-mile round trip trail that leads to a scenic overlook of the canyon.

Tour the Historic Ranch House

The restored ranch house tells the story of Oliver Lee, whose ranching career and involvement in the Lincoln County era made him one of New Mexico’s best-known frontier figures. Guided tours are offered on select days and provide a glimpse into ranch life at the turn of the twentieth century.

Camp Beneath the Mountains

The campground offers big sites with views of the Sacramento Mountains and the Tularosa Basin. It’s a quiet place to spend the night, with dark skies that make for excellent stargazing.

Watch for Wildlife

The transition between desert and mountains creates habitat for a surprising variety of wildlife. Mule deer, roadrunners, lizards, and numerous bird species are commonly seen, especially during the cooler morning and evening hours.

Final Take

Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is one of southern New Mexico’s best state parks, and a personal favorite of mine. Its combination of desert scenery, challenging hiking, fascinating history, and excellent camping makes it well worth a stop if you find yourself in the area.
