Terrain Overview
Red River Ski & Summer Area is located above the town of Red River, making it a convenient ski destination. Instead of staying in a separate resort village, you can walk from town to the base of the mountain, then return to Red River’s restaurants, shops, bars, and lodging after skiing.
The mountain is on the smaller side but it still has a good mix of terrain. Beginner runs and learning areas are available near the base, while intermediate groomers cover much of the mountain. There are some steeper runs, moguls, glades, and tree skiing higher up the slopes. Red River also maintains terrain parks for skiers and snowboarders.
The mountain’s relatively compact layout and easy access from town make it especially well suited to families and groups with different ability levels. About a third of the terrain is rated easier, another third intermediate, and the remaining terrain is classified as most difficult.
Facilities & Services
The base area has equipment rentals, ski and snowboard lessons, guest services, retail, and dining. The resort also operates winter tubing, providing something to do for visitors who do not want to spend the entire day skiing.
Food is available at several locations on the mountain, including the Main Chalet near the base and The Tip Restaurant near the summit. Unlike most ski areas, Red River is integrated directly into the surrounding town, so additional restaurants, shops, hotels, cabins, and condominiums are only a short walk or shuttle ride away.
On winter Saturdays, the resort also holds its long-running torchlight parade and fireworks display, with skiers descending the mountain after dark before fireworks are launched above the town.
Getting There
Red River Ski & Summer Area is located directly beside downtown Red River along the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway. From Taos, travel north on NM 522 through Questa, then turn east onto NM 38 and follow the highway into Red River. The drive takes roughly 45 to 50 minutes under normal conditions.
NM 38 crosses mountainous terrain and can become snowy or icy during winter storms, so check road conditions before making the drive. Once in Red River, the ski area is immediately accessible from town, and a local shuttle provides service between lodging areas and the slopes.
