Spaceport America

Spaceport America is a commercial spaceflight facility located in the Jornada del Muerto desert, about 20 miles southeast of Truth or Consequences. Opened as the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport, the state-owned complex covers roughly 18,000 acres and includes a 12,000-foot runway, vertical launch areas, hangars, and testing facilities.

Why did New Mexico build a spaceport?

New Mexico built Spaceport America in 2011 to attract commercial space companies, create high-tech jobs, and expand the state’s aerospace economy. Southern New Mexico was chosen for its clear weather, open desert, low population, high elevation, and access to restricted airspace near White Sands Missile Range. The spaceport serves as a base for aerospace companies including Virgin Galactic, UP Aerospace, and SpinLaunch.

Can you visit Spaceport America?

Spaceport America remains an active and secure facility rather than a walk-in attraction. Visitors can learn about the site at the free Geronimo Trail Visitor Center in Truth or Consequences or arrange an authorized guided tour in advance. Tours are booked through Final Frontier Tours with a Friday tour departing from Las Cruces and a Saturday tour departing from Truth or Consequences. Expect to see the Gateway Gallery, the 12,000-foot runway, and mission control among other things.
